Washington State's proposed licensing fee increases for adult family homes are not just numbers on a budget—they are a direct hit to the very heart of senior care. These hikes, buried deep in the state budget, would more than double the current costs for providers. That’s not just unreasonable—it’s unsustainable.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t about avoiding responsibility or contributing less. It’s about survival. The proposed increases—from $225 to over $500 per bed—plus steep upfront costs for licensing and ownership changes, are enough to push many smaller homes out of operation. That means fewer options for families, more pressure on overburdened systems, and a dangerous step backward for vulnerable seniors who rely on these homes for personalized, community-based care.
We at Evergreen Oasis Care Home know this firsthand. As a recently licensed adult family home, we’ve seen the obstacles new providers face. We entered this space with a passion to serve seniors, especially those with developmental disabilities, dementia, and mental health needs—groups often overlooked in broader care systems. These fee hikes would make it nearly impossible for newer, mission-driven homes like ours to get off the ground, let alone thrive.
That’s why we’re standing in strong support of the Adult Family Home Council’s petition to stop these fee increases. This is a fight not just for providers, but for every Washington family that wants quality, affordable elder care in a home-like setting.
